The 2011 ARKEN Prize goes to Pascale Marthine Tayou, who is recognized as a leading representative of the booming African contemporary art scene. Tayou's work His works are overwhelmingly sensuous. They communicate a fundamentally humanistic and lifeaffirming message of openness about the way people live and the untrammelled movement of thought in a globalized world. He combines sense impressions and material from his African origins with elements from Western tradition and mass culture. The works often address the topics of travel and cultural encounters and fusions. Tayou explores questions of migration, identity and culture, and his approach to relations between Africa and the rest of the world is always decentred and multivalent.
